Given the differences in genetic architecture, ethnicity, cultures, lifestyles, and healthcare systems across different populations, all of which can contribute to the predisposition, precipitation, and perpetuation of diabetes, there is a need to understand better diabetes among Asians with local data from each country. Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes (AASD) was established in 2010 to gather clinicians and scientists inside Asia to exchange their expertise for a better understanding of the phenotype of diabetes in Asians and clinical care in the Asian context. Although aging, urbanization, and associated lifestyle changes are the major determinants for the rapid increase, an adverse intrauterine environment and the resulting epigenetic changes could also contribute to the rising cases of diabetes in Asia. More action is required to understand the drivers of the epidemic and provide a rationale for prevention strategies to address the increasing global public health.
